Keynote Speaker Andrea Stein

Award-winning author Andrea J. Stein is a lifetime lover of books. Her love of reading and belief in education and literacy has influenced her own fiction, including her debut novel, Typecast, which was featured in Buzzfeed and ScaryMommy. Her sophomore novel, Dear Eliza, has received praise from multiple bestselling authors of women’s fiction and widespread media attention. A book publicist by profession, Stein holds a Bachelor’s degree from Bard College and a Master’s degree from Cornell University.

We are honored to have Andrea Stein provide our keynote address where she will discuss how literacy changes lives and opens doors. In addition to the keynote address, Stein will be available for a book-club style discussion of Dear Eliza.

In Memory of Ruth Colvin

We would like to dedicate this conference to the memory of Ruth J. Colvin, who passed away in August 2024 at the age of 107. In 1961, Ruth started a tutoring program in her basement after learning that many of her fellow community members in Syracuse were unable to read. This became the international organization, Literacy Volunteers of America, under which Literacy NJ was founded. Ruth was the author of many books, including Tutor; I Speak English; and My Travels Through Life, Love, and Literacy. Her honors include receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2006 and induction into the National Women’s Hall of Fame. She was a visionary, a powerful advocate for adult literacy, and a true lifelong learner, who was still asking questions and engaging with literacy programs well into her 100s. Ruth’s life and work is a tremendous inspiration to us. We hope this conference would have made her proud.
