Everyday Hero: Literacy NJ Student Writing

I have been teaching students both individually and as a group for four years. I have learned far more from my students than they have learned from me. I have met people who were brave enough to leave their own countries to begin a new life in this country. They cheerfully work hard to learn the language of their new home. I admire their determination to create a good and safe life for their families. Jane Von Jaglinsky, tutor

When our students learn English and improve their literacy, they find ways to give back to their communities, and our communities are enriched by their contributions. This year’s magazine includes student writing about performing acts of service, embracing differences and diversity, and overcoming challenges to pursue personal growth. We are proud to share their stories.

Literacy NJ exists so that all adults have the opportunity to read, write, and communicate effectively. Thank you to AmeriCorps and The New Jersey Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission for supporting our vision and helping us to create a more equitable society through service.

Literacy NJ Student Magazine

We are excited to share our 2024 student magazine, Visions of a Perfect World.

“Education and training is the best gift you could give to a person and volunteering in that aspect of helping your community, helping the people around you to be well, is a very beautiful action….As a beneficiary of a volunteer program, I hope to give in the future the same thing that these wonderful people do for me today.” Miguel Borelli, p. 74

This fall, our tutors taught lessons on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy. In response, our students wrote about the importance of their sense of community, the charities they would like to start, and their hopes and dreams for our future. Many students, like Miguel, wrote about their volunteer tutors when asked to reflect on the importance of service. We hope you will enjoy reading their pieces.
